Breast Augmentation Or Breast Lift: How to Tell Which Is Suitable?

Breast enhancement is a popular plastic surgery in Singapore where many women consider undergoing to improve the shape and appearance of their breast. One of the common question among these ladies who are thinking about breast enhancement surgery is which is suitable for them – breast lift or breast augmentation?  In this article, we will go through each of these and who is suitable candidate for each procedure.

The best way to know if you need a breast implant or a breast lift or both is to consult a Singapore certified breast enhancement plastic surgeon. A properly trained breast surgeon who is experienced in all forms of breast enhancement surgery will properly evaluate your situation, listen to your goals and concerns and then propose the best operative plan for you.

When Do You Need A Breast Lift?

A general guideline will be to make a note of where your nipples are in relation to your breast crease. The best looking breasts have the nipples on the front pointing forward.  If you look in the mirror and see skin below the areola and the bottom of the breast then you do not need a breast lift. However, if you cannot see skin below the areola but just able to see areola or if the nipples are at or below the crease under the breast or are pointing down toward the floor then you will require a breast lift to get the best looking breast shape.

If your goal is to have your nipple moved to a higher location and to have your breasts made tighter then a breast lift would suffice.

A breast lift is a surgical procedure whereby excess skin of the breast is removed, thereby tightening it and reshaping it. There is no increase in the overall size of the breast and the actual breast volume itself does not changed. For those with a significant amount of existing breast tissue, a breast lift alone may produce an aesthetically ideal breast appearance.

You are a good candidate for breast lift if you have the following:

  • The nipple is below the crease under the breast or points downward
  • There is no visible skin under the nipple/areola when looking at the breasts straight on.
  • The areola is too large and you want it reduced
  • Breast drooping is moderate or severe
  • You want to correct breast ptosis
  • You are already a C or D cup breast size and doesn’t want to be larger

A breast lift can be done in conjunction with or without implants. In most cases, when a breast lift is necessary, many women prefer to have at least a small or medium size implant placed either directly under the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle at the same time to allow for more fullness in the upper portion of the breast and to have a firmer, more youthful looking appearance.

When Do You Need A Breast Implant?

A breast augmentation has a different goal than a breast lift. The intention of placing breast implants is increase the size of the breasts, making it larger. Some women have lost breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss but the shape of their breast still look fine with no excess tissue or skin needed to be removed. In this situation where the nipple doesn’t need to be lifted then breast augmentation alone will suffice as they just simply need to “re-fill” the empty skin.

Breast implant surgery alone will correct drooping when:

  • The nipple is still near the center breast and does not point downward
  • Breast drooping is mild
  • There is some visible skin beneath the nipple/areola when looking at the breasts straight on.
  • You are fine with being at least a cup size larger

When Do You Need A Breast Implant With Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation in conjunction with a breast lift will be ideal for you when:

  • You want a larger breast in addition to being less droopy
  • Want to maintain projection and roundness of the breast mound
  • The breast sagging or drooping is severe
  • It is important to you to have the appearance of some fullness in the upper part of the breasts yet you do not have enough natural upper pole breast tissue to achieve this appearance
